When trash becomes so much more

I am a hardcore environmentalist. I live by the motto of reuse and recycle. And I can be really annoying about it. If you don’t believe me, you can ask my friends. They’ll have tons of stories to tell you about how I got on their nerves about recycling something or throwing stuff in the wrong trash can. But I honestly think recycling is serious business and we cannot afford to slack because Mother Nature needs us. Without intervention, the world will be full of garbage! There is something that I’ve learnt though. People don’t like to do things that they should if creativity isn’t involved. So I’m going to give you some examples of how you can turn trash into wonderfully useful household items. Here are some of the things that I made out of “garbage”:

   Plastic bottle bird feeders  –

Don’t throw away those plastic bottles because we all know where they end up. Do you know about the Great Pacific garbage patch? Yep. Right there. So why not use those bottles to feed the cute little birdies in your yard? Be careful though. Cutting plastic can be a little tricky. Here’s a video you could watch for instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE9jKmQJED0

Cereal box magazine holders – This one is really simple. Cut the cereal box (No, not in half. Be innovative about it. You could use those fancy scissors.) and paint or decorate it. You have your very own magazine recycled magazine holder.

Soda can coasters –

For all you neat freaks out there, there is a way to make recycled coasters! Cut out soda cans in square shapes and paste them on small ceramic tiles and voila! They’ll look pretty edgy.

 Yogurt containers or castle makers?

Use yogurt containers (or plastic containers of any kind) and paint them. They will make excellent sandcastle makers during the summer. It’s time to go to the beach!

Here’s a quirky idea for all you accessory-loving girls out there. Use egg cartons to store all your jewelry. Design it the way you like for a very nature friendly way of keeping your jewelry organized!

DIY Edible Wedding Favors

Ideas for wedding favors always need to be given a lot of thought before you finally decide on something. It is the only material thing that people take away from weddings and that’s what makes the wedding memorable to them (hopefully!). It always adds a little bit of humor when the wedding favors are fun and more specifically, edible. So here are a few ideas for DIY wedding favors. Feel free to snack on them while you make them!

1. Jelly Beans in a Net

This is a simple yet fun wedding favor and is extremely easy to make. All you need is a fistful of jelly beans, a square piece of net, preferably 6 inches x 6 inches, and a 5 cm ribbon to match.

First off, pick the jelly beans based on the color theme of your wedding, for instance, purple and white. The finished result looks better if there are no more than 3 colors (stick to 2 if possible). The net should be a color that matches with your jelly beans (let’s go with silver for this one). Take a fistful of purple and white jelly beans and place them in the middle of the silver net. Then lift the corners of the net around the jelly beans and bring them together on top in a bunch. Tie it together with a matching ribbon.

You can adjust the quantity of jelly beans depending on how full you want the bag. Feel free to adjust the size of the bag as well. You can also choose to go with plastic instead of net but I feel that net makes it look prettier as there are more color options. Don’t forget to throw in a thank you card!

2. Cookie Basket

This is a great idea if Grandma wants to help out with the wedding prep. Go with small baskets, it is cuter and easier to manage! Once you have found the right sized basket, ask Grandma to go ahead and start baking. For an easy and delicious cookie recipe try http://spoonful.com/recipes/chocolate-chip-cookie-dough.

Once the cookies are ready fill them up into the baskets and cover the basket with Saran Wrap.
But not before you have put in your thank you card!

3. Hot Chocolate Wedding Favors

This is my favorite wedding favor. Along with being cute and delicious it is also extremely unique. All you need is chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and tiny white marshmallows. You will also need those plastic food grade cones.
